Shipping a vehicle can seem complicated when you first start researching your options. You may need to coordinate a pickup location, transportation arrangements, delivery details, and vehicle preparation.
Door-to-door auto transport is designed to make this process more convenient by allowing the transportation plan to be arranged around specific pickup and delivery locations.
What Does Door-to-Door Auto Transport Mean?
Door-to-door auto transport generally means that the vehicle is picked up as close as practical to the requested pickup address and delivered as close as practical to the requested destination.
However, “door-to-door” does not always mean that a carrier can physically park directly in front of a home or business.
Large vehicle carriers need sufficient space to safely access roads and maneuver. Some residential streets, narrow roads, restricted areas, apartment complexes, or other locations may not be suitable for a large transport carrier.
When direct access is not practical, an alternative nearby location may be arranged.
Why Do Customers Choose Door-to-Door Transport?
Convenience is one of the main reasons customers choose door-to-door transportation.
Instead of taking the vehicle to a distant terminal and arranging separate transportation to and from the terminal, the pickup and delivery arrangements can be planned around the customer’s locations where practical.
This can be especially helpful when:
- Relocating to another state
- Purchasing a vehicle from another location
- Selling a vehicle to an out-of-state buyer
- Moving for work
- Helping a family member move a vehicle
- Transporting a vehicle over a long distance
Door-to-Door Auto Transport for Relocation
Moving to another city or state often involves many different tasks. Packing, finding housing, changing addresses, and arranging transportation can all require time.
If you are relocating and do not want to drive your vehicle the entire distance, auto transport can provide another option.
Door-to-door transportation may allow you to arrange vehicle pickup near your current location and delivery near your new destination, subject to carrier access and transportation conditions.
Preparing for Door-to-Door Vehicle Shipping
Before pickup, make sure you understand the preparation instructions provided for your shipment.
Remove personal belongings and unnecessary items from the vehicle unless specifically permitted under the shipping arrangements.
You should also make sure the vehicle is accessible for inspection and pickup.
Documenting the vehicle’s condition before transportation can also be useful. Take photographs of the exterior and note any existing damage before the vehicle is picked up.
At delivery, review the vehicle’s condition and complete the required delivery documentation.
Location Accessibility Matters
One important thing to understand about door-to-door auto transport is that the exact address may not always be usable by a large carrier.
For example, a carrier may have difficulty accessing:
- Narrow residential streets
- Dead-end streets
- Low-clearance areas
- Roads with restrictions
- Crowded urban locations
- Areas where large commercial vehicles cannot safely maneuver
In these situations, the pickup or delivery location may need to be adjusted to a safer and more accessible nearby location.
